Institute for Future Legislators 2023
The Institute for Future Legislators is a 6-week program that seeks to engage thoughtful community members who are interested in exploring not only what today’s legislatures look like, but what it could be - particularly those from marginalized groups. I engaged in intensive, hands-on workshops, and mentoring and training from current and former legislators, senior civil servants, high-profile journalists and successful advocates. The program ran over three weekends in May and June of 2023, and culminated in a trip to Ottawa where we completed a parliamentary simulation. During the program.

Throughout the weekend, I had the honour of sitting and speaking in the Senate of Canada through question periods, participating in caucus meetings with other “government” members, and meeting several Senators and MPs.

In addition to my main roles, I was able to participate in an Indigenous and Northern Affairs committee. Through committee meetings, I had the opportunity to meet and listen to Senator Michèle Audette, an inspiring Indigenous woman who is currently advocating for the approval of Bill C-29- an act to provide for the establishment of a national council for reconciliation to become law.

During the program, I received the award for Best Orator. This award recognized me for being a strong and creative public speaker in caucus meetings, committee meetings, and when speaking in the House.
